Physiotherapist provide the assessment, prevention and treatment of human movement disorders resulting from injury, illness, disability or aging.
Physiotherapists can assess and treat injuries for patients in the acute (immediate) phase of the injury as well as assess, treat and manage historic injuries or other movement problems.
Physiotherapists are trained to see patients presenting within the following categories/conditions:
Orthopaedic: Acute and chronic condition management – fractures;
rheumatologic conditions; amputees; pre and post orthopaedic surgery.
Including splinting and casting in some areas.
Musculoskeletal: Prevent, assess, diagnose and treat musculoskeletal
conditions – sprains, strains, and musculo-tendinous injuries. Acute
management to resolution and exercise prescription.
Neurology: acute and chronic conditions: acquired brain injury; stroke; spinal cord damage; Parkinson’s disease; Dementia; Multiple Sclerosis.
Cardiorespiratory: prevention and rehabilitation of heart and lung
conditions; COPD; Asthma; Heart Disease; Post heart and lung surgery
and transplant.
Continence and Women’s Health: pregnancy, birth, pre and post
partum care; breastfeeding; incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction in men, women and children; post gynecological and prostate surgery
Gerontology: care and promote healthy/active ageing. Manage/prevent
effects of ageing: osteoporosis; falls. Work in home, community and aged
care facilities.
Paediatric: early intervention: plagiocephally; developmental milestones – gross and fine motor; genetic and metabolic conditions; Cystic Fibrosis; paediatric trauma and neurology; cerebral palsy.
Sports: prevent, diagnose, and treat sporting injuries for all people, all
ages from amateur to professional. Screening acute management and
rehabilitation.
Cancer, Palliative care, Lymphoedema: specific lymph treatment –
massage and compression therapy. Manage fatigue, pain, deconditioning.
Pain: manage/prevent pain and impact on function – psychologically
informed approach. Acute management, identification of psychosocial risk factors; chronic pain management – interdisciplinary.
Aquatic: hydrotherapy – postoperative; orthopaedic; spinal; neurological; sports rehabilitation.
Rural and Remote: health promotion; inpatient and outpatient clinics;
diabetes education; splinting/casting.
Burns, Hands and Plastic Surgery: treat and manage specific hand
conditions, splinting; post surgical; burns rehabilitation.
Occupational Health and Ergonomics: support health of workers,
reduce safety risks, prevent/manage injuries and return to work;
Ergonomic assessment and equipment provision; specialist seating clinics.
